Beautiful Art for Beautiful Minds 2010
"There's a First Time for Everything..."

Editors Note: On Friday, May 21st, the Chinook Clubhouse held it's annual Beautiful Art for Beautiful Minds fundraiser at Macy's in the 29th St. Mall, Boulder, Colorado. This is the story of one member's experience.
I was able to attend BABM for the first time, thanks to a donated ticket. This is important for my recovery because :I am working on going to social events (not just participating in the work-order day. It also gave me a chance to experience Mental Health advocacy at its best!! And last but not least, the tremendous amount of support for the Clubhouse became a reality to me. It showed me how many people and business’ truly support and believe in what the Clubhouse has to offer.
The first thing I noticed was how gracious Macy’s was in donating it’s space. I could tell right away how much time it took them to accommodate this special annual event. The second thing I noticed was how many donors, artists, restaurants, volunteers and patrons not only worked for BABM to become a reality, but also how many of them actually showed up at the event!!
The conversation and comradery were definitely something I have always thought that the clubhouse has contributed to its members…And with BABM it also showed me “regular every-day” citizens from near and afar are not so different then myself and others at the clubhouse. There was so much participation, selflessness, and advocacy throughout our community for the better good of “us”, the consumers of mental health.
The art, jewelry, gift packages from Macy’s, and the food were simply amazing. I saw first hand what great and beautiful items that were up for auction. There were so many things that I wanted to bid on, but it never happened due to my finances. However, I observed that many people got to walk away with cool stuff.
All in all, BABM was a huge success – Not only for the clubhouse and mental health center, but also for our members, who put so much time and effort in the preparations of this event. I felt this gave many of our members a sense of advocacy and empowerment – Way to go “Chinookers.” I guess it’s true when one says, “It takes a village to raise a child.”
For those who have never attended, don’t worry—BABM happens every year, rain or shine. It’s never too late to be a part of the clubhouse’s main fundraiser. As I stated already, the ability to advocate for ourselves and those whose voice is not heard, along with the empowerment to make a difference for everyone in our community is such an amazing thing!! Until next time, thanks to everyone who took part, even those who couldn’t attend.
